UPSC Civil Services Prelims Syllabus 2015 & Exam Pattern is described below. UPSC CSE Prelims is also know as CSAT Exam.  Consists of two papers that is Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are compulsory of all candidates . Full mark of each paper is  200 Marks with Negative Marking of 1/3 of the mark assigned to the questions. UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern :

  1. The Civil Services Preliminary Examination consists of two papers, Paper-1 & Paper-2
  2. 100 questions from Paper-1 (General Studies) carries 200 Marks and 80 questions from Paper-2 (Aptitude) carries 200 Marks.
  3. Paper I Syllabus includes current affairs questions & Paper – II covers the aptitude questions. In paper-2, candidates has to score at least 33% to qualify for the Civil Services (Mains).
  4. Negative marking is 1/3 of the mark assigned to the question.

A candidate qualified for mains in a particular year will be eligible to appear for main exams of that particular year.

UPSC Civil Services Prelims Syllabus 2015

The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers, each of 200 marks. The detailed syllabus and the course contents are given below.

Paper I – (200 marks) (General Studies) Duration : Two hours 

  1. Current events of national and international importance.
  2. History of India and Indian National Movement.
  3. Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  4. Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  5. Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  6. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.
  7. General Science.

Paper II- (200 marks) (Aptitude) Duration: Two hours 

  1.  Comprehension
  2.  Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
  3.  Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  4.  Decision-making and problem-solving
  5.  General mental ability
  6.  Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
  7.  English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

Note  : Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.

 Important Instructions:

  • Candidates should not answer the questions of  English Language Comprehension skills (of Class X level)  in each set of Test Booklets of Paper-II, because it will not be evaluated.
  • Do not attempt questions on English Language Comprehension skills for which Hindi translation has not been given in the respective Test Booklets of Paper-II.
  • Final merit for qualifying the candidates for the Civil Services (Main) Written Examination will be drawn by using the aggregate marks obtained in Paper-I out of 200 marks and marks obtained in Paper-II out of 200 marks minus  the maximum marks allocated to the questions on English Language Comprehension skills (i.e. those questions in Paper-II for which Hindi translation has not been given).
