Q.1. Answer the following questions in brief: 2x 10

(a) What is the difference between Reynolds analogy and Prandtl analogy of heat flow through the boundary layer of a flat plate?

(b) What is the difference between advection and diffusion?

(c) What is the difference between friction factor and co-efficient of friction? Write down for laminar flow in a tube the expression of co-efficient of friction in terms of Reynolds number.

(d) Show that the co-efficient of volumetric expression (ß) for an ideal gas is ß= 1/T where T is absolute temperature of the gas.

(e) What is the physical significance of Grashof number with reference to heat transfer by natural convection? What is Rayleigh number? What do you mean by critical value of Rayleigh number’?

(f) What is critical heat flux? What is its importance? Show it on the regime of boiling.

(g) Assuming laminar film condensation, calculate the rate of the heat transfer on a vertical tube to that for a horizontal tube of same diameter D and length L.

(h) In a definition of effectiveness explain why a minimum heat capacity value (Cmin) is used for the maximum possible rate of heat transfer.

(i) Define Fick’s law of diffusion. What is mass diffusivity? What is its dimension?

(j) Define and explain the physical significance of Lewis number and Sherwood number.
